Karpuri Thakur : Early Life and Education

Karpuri Thakur was born on January 24, 1924, in a small village in the Samastipur district of Bihar, India. He came from a humble background and belonged to the Koeri caste, which was considered a backward community at that time. Despite the challenges he faced, Thakur was determined to get an education. He completed his schooling at his village school and then went on to Patna University, where he earned a law degree.

Thakur entered politics in the early 1950s and joined the socialist Indian National Congress party. He was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1952 and served as a minister in several state governments. In 1970, he became the Chief Minister of Bihar for the first time.

Thakur’s tenure as Chief Minister was marked by a number of significant reforms. Thakur served as Chief Minister of Bihar for two terms, from 1970 to 1971 and from 1977 to 1979. He remained active in politics until his death in 1988. He is remembered as a champion of the poor and a leader who dedicated his life to social justice.
